Minutes Kairos Truro and Area Cluster
January 19, 2011, 6:30 p.m.
Kennedy Room, Immaculate Conception Church

Present: Barton, Doris, Rhoda, Don, Lorne, Jocelyn, Joan
Regrets: Joanna, MaryJo

The meeting commenced with silent prayer in honor of Dick Cotterill, a new member

1. Doris presented information from a book, “Ethical Oil” by Ezra Levant whose thesis is that, as Canada is an ethical country, we should continue extraction from the oil sands instead of relying on oil from countries with repressive regimes.

2. Anti Bottled Water Day is April 10th.  More information is available from the Ecology Action Center.

3. Don offered to write a letter to our member of parliament, Scott Armstrong, urging his support for Bill 393, which will give African Countries access to anti viral drugs through Doctors Without Borders, as a safeguard against profiteering by local governments.  Bart will sign it and deliver it to Scott.

4. Dick introduced “Sisters in Spirit”, an information session which will be sponsored by the Religious Society of Friends and supported by Kairos.  The library is booked for February 15th with speakers Cheryl Maloney and Dick Cotterill.  We will publicize the event through Presberterial, church bulletins and church presentations.

5. Barton announced that he is relocating to Montreal in April for a newly created position involving food security.

6. Doris and Rhoda agreed to be co-chairs.

7. Don drew our attention to a Brazilian company, VALE, which intends to operate a nickel smelting plant in Long Harbor, Newfoundland.  Although the company’s profits are counted in billions of dollars they intend to use a local trout pond, Sandy Pond, as a settling pond.  The issue is in the courts at the moment.  Don will scan and distribute the article to members.

8. Next meeting February 8th at 11:45, location to be announced.
